Tips for Hollum and Ameland

Appartement De Noordkaap is in Hollum, the westernmost village on Ameland. The beach, dunes, woods and the old village are all close by. These are our favourite outings nearby and across the rest of the island.

In and around Hollum

Bornrif lighthouse

Hollum’s red-and-white lighthouse was built in 1880 and, at 55 metres, is the tallest lighthouse on the Wadden Islands. After 236 steps you look out over the whole island, the North Sea and the Wadden Sea.

Maritime Centre Abraham Fock and the horse-drawn lifeboat

At Maritime Centre Abraham Fock on the Oranjeweg in Hollum you’ll discover all about sea rescues, navigation and shipwrecks. You can steer a ship yourself from a real bridge. This is also home to the famous horse-drawn lifeboat. During demonstrations, ten horses pull the boat across the beach into the surf. Does the picture look familiar? It also hangs in the apartment’s bedroom.

Sorgdrager Museum of Cultural History

In an eighteenth-century house once home to whalers, you can learn about the history of Ameland and whaling. Exhibits include two large blubber boilers and a harpoon cannon.

Bunker museum in the dunes

In the dunes near Hollum is a small bunker museum about Ameland in the Second World War, up to the island’s liberation on 3 June 1945.

Beach and nature

  • Hollum beach holds the Blue Flag for clean and safe bathing. It’s a short walk from the apartment.
  • Spot seals from the beach, or on a seal-watching boat trip across the Wadden Sea.
  • The Lichtpunt op Ameland walking route is a 12-kilometre walk through nature, past Hollum lighthouse, ending at a beach pavilion.

Cycling on Ameland
